SmartLipo is a type of laser liposuction whereby a laser fiber is used to help melt away fat, making it easier to suction the fat away and providing smoother looking skin. Adults do not create new fat cells. Therefore as we gain weight, our existing fat cells are simply getting larger and filling up with more fat inside of each individual fat cell wall. In both cases tumescent fluid is injected into the area to be treated. This sterile fluid contains local anesthetic and medication to reduce blood loss during the procedure. Both types of liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia. However, most cases of traditional liposuction are still performed under general anesthesia with its associated potential risks and added costs.

However, with SmartLipo, a laser fiber is first used to melt away fat, making it easier to suction the fat away with a very small cannula and providing smoother looking skin. The gentle heat of the laser offers the added benefit of tightened skin. In addition, SmartLipo targets only the fat cells, leaving blood vessels alone. This results in fewer broken blood vessels and very little bleeding during the procedure. There is also less bruising and faster recovery with less discomfort. With Non-Laser “Traditional” Liposuction, no laser is used to melt the fat before suctioning it. It is usually performed under general anesthesia since a larger cannula is usually used to suction the fat which makes it very uncomfortable for the patient if performed under local anesthesia. It usually leads to relatively more blood loss, more bruising and extended recovery times (usually over 7 days). Usually loose skin is left behind since no laser is involved to help tighten the skin. As stated above, traditional liposuction is usually performed under general anesthesia with its associated risks and added costs.
